Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Penalized $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Obscene Gesture toward Spectators
The NFL has levied a substantial $250,000 penalty on Dallas Cowboys proprietor Jones for an action he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture made toward fans during a recent contest at the Jets’ stadium.
Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones flashing his middle finger at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually giving a thumbs-up to Cowboys fans present at the game as his team secured a decisive win.
“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with our fans seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further emphasized that the gesture was entirely accidental, occurring amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect digit,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it accidental, you can. However, it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an league proprietor has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
- Former Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is recognized for his media savvy, reportedly has an estimated wealth of around $16bn, making the penalty manageable for the billionaire owner.
Recent Issues and Media Spotlight
The incident follows a controversial offseason for Jones, who encountered widespread criticism from the Dallas supporters after the team dealt key defensive player Micah Parsons to the Packers.
Additionally, Jones was a prominent figure in a Netflix documentary that explored his influence in building the Cowboys into the world’s highest-worth sports franchise, even with its recent championship drought.
The league’s decision to fine Jones highlights its continuing initiative to maintain proper behavior among all franchise representatives, regardless of their status or wealth.
